Hedrin has been developed taking into account the mode of action of lice killers; lice killers contain chemicals that take effect either chemically or biologically. Head lice can become resistant to these chemicals, and at this point, although chemicals are applied to the head, the treatment against head lice is not always effective. Hedrin lice killer does not contain any chemically or biologically active chemicals. Its active ingredient is activdiol, which does not react with the skin. As a result, it is gentle on the scalp. Activdiol works physically against head lice;
Like all insects, head lice are covered by a waxy protective coating. It is this waxy layer that helps the louse maintain its delicate internal water balance, preventing too much water from evaporating. The Activdiol® in Hedrin works dissolving away this waxy cuticle, causing death by dehydration. Activdiol is available in treatment strength (5%) or protection strength (1%).
Because Dimeticone and Activdiol® kill lice with a ‘physical’ mode of action unlike a traditional chemical pesticide, you can use them as often as you like without the danger of the lice becoming resistant. Hedrin products are also free from solvents that can cause problems in some asthma sufferers.
It completely covers the parasite, penetrating even its respiratory system, - asphyxiating it - thus greatly increasing the chances of successful treatment.
Hedrin lice killer is colourless and odourless and does not contain any chemically or biologically active chemicals. Its active substance does not interact with the scalp and can be used from 6 months of age. Hedrin does not contain any solvents which can cause problems for users suffering from asthma. The ingredients used in the Hedrin formulations have all been used in cosmetic formulations for many years and have been shown to be well tolerated.
All formulations are patented and have been shown to be effective at killing head lice in clinical trials and even work on lice that have developed a resistance to traditional pesticide treatments.
Is head lice a common problem?
Yes, head lice is quite a common problem. One in ten people get head lice1. And although everyone is susceptible, it is most common among children aged 4 to 11.
Is there any connection between the cleanliness of hair or the environment, and head lice?
It is a misconception that lice are attracted to dirty scalps. Head lice infestation is not at all related to the cleanliness of one’s head and hair. Head lice can also be found on regularly groomed and well-kept heads.
Are head lice dangerous to household pets?
No, because lice are only human parasites. Accordingly, they do not infect dogs, cats, or other household pets.
How do head lice spread?
Head lice cannot jump, fly or swim. The infection only spreads through immediate contact, directly from head-to-head. Head lice cannot live on clothes, hats, combs, or furniture. Although it can occur that lice remain on a comb or brush due to the electrostatic charge generated during use.
Is there any connection between head lice and hair length?
No, because lice can easily live on hair as short as 1 cm in length. The only advantage of short hair is that the infection is easier to discover and simpler to treat.
How to spot head lice?
The size of head lice depends on its age: Head lice range from 0.5 to 3 mm in size (between the size of a printed dot and a sesame seed). Head lice are not easy to spot because their colour sometimes adapts to their environment. When combing with a fine-toothed comb, live head lice falling from one’s head are a clear sign of head lice infection. They cause the scalp to itch, so frequent itching of the head can be a sign of head lice infection.
I have found live lice, what do I do now?
Do not panic! The most important thing at times like this is to thoroughly inspect all family members, since head lice spread through head-to-head contact. Treatment must be carried out simultaneously in all infected family members, thus reducing the chance of cross contamination after treatment.
